Went to a concert, decided to post a few stories. I always try to cut videos nicely, I don't like to just upload as is. At this point I could have already thought that I'm doing something that's not accepted on Instagram. The target audience uploads everything as is and doesn't worry. But no.
It all ended with these videos showing normally on preview before upload, but after upload - they completely lose sound. Had to delete, convert to another format and re-upload. Apparently Instagram's backend doesn't know how to work with some most common codecs. And the nicest thing - you learn about this in the app only after you've uploaded everything, yes.
From stably reproducible bugs you can also remember that when editing photos in the built-in editor, Instagram often decides to just add white bars to your photo, which you also learn about only after publication. Or that the video aspect ratio is resolved somehow asynchronously, first the video in the carousel blinks in the wrong view, then fixes. Or that Instagram can ignore the fact that I actually moved the viewport in its editor so the right part of the photo ended up in it. After upload you can find out that it didn't move and now you have someone without a head in the photo.
And these bugs are years old. Just the worst app by the ratio of number of users to implementation quality of all I've seen in my life. No one even close. I really don't envy those who use Instagram as a work tool, I just publish something there for history once every couple of months. Instagram is very unreliable and unpredictable, you can absolutely never rely on it.
Let's even omit that the interface and design of the app were made by predators for others, ignoring all guidelines and common sense. Probably works well, since no one does anything about it. Maybe on iOS the situation is better, the target audience after all. But honestly, it's hard to believe. Looking at the fact that they couldn't stretch the layout to iPad in 10 years, I don't believe in anything anymore.
And it's really quite offensive for all this, they do a lot of things right and have brought a lot of good into this world in one way or another. But the mobile app is disgusting. This is some eternal MVP that from a business point of view works, despite the quality.
